STORY:

The psychedelic painter studied art at school for GCSE and A level, then went on to focus on her music career and studies at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP). Once the lockdown hit, she had the urge to return to her love for painting and spent most of her time creating dreamy art from her rooftop. Her style focusses on merging a youthful essence of the fiery, creative spirit that she holds, with nature and abstract scenery/ forms. She does this through her use of bold, vibrant colour, connecting dream and reality.

Recently in remission from Acute Lymphoblastic Leaukemia, the emotional rollercoaster and deep lessons have heavily impacted the direction of the artwork. Everyday in the hospital, painting helped to soothe the soul, illustrating the unexplainable emotions that were felt. Topaz made a small gallery in the room, giving light to the space for healing to take place. She hopes and will spread awareness of the creative beams of light that we are, and how even in the darkest times, there is always a light- 'We can use art/ music/ the creative arts, as a medium to release things in our hearts'.

As well as being an artist, Topaz is also a dedicated musician who founded the group 'Fire In Her Eyes' seven years ago. After many transformations, the band has finally been distilled to her and her sister, Natasha. They release music online and perform live with and without a full band, and after taking a year out due to the circumstances, are now back in full force. Their music is progressive folk/ pop/ rock soul with elements of world music and other influences. It encompasses the same message as Topaz's art, they intertwine together.

In addition to channelling her creativity into music and art, Topaz is a writer of novels/ scripts and poetry. Upon reflection of the past seven years, during the last round of chemotherapy at UCLH, she had the time and inspiration to write her first self illustrated, thought provoking novel- 'The Circus Diaries I -Circus Town'- Out in 2023.  psychological, fictional tale about a circus who are given the keys to magic...The story is an allegory for the journey of the band, and the experiences she has been through, with unexpected plot twists.

A few months after returning home, along with her sister Natasha, they organised an exciting event at amp studios. This was to display the "Tropical Sun Storm' art gallery inspired by the crazy journey. Along with the art , it was also the launch for the come back of their band 'Fire In her Eyes', where all the music, art and story link together to portray the message 'There is always a light somewhere in the darkness'.

'I started using my hands and fingers to apply the paint... It helped to ease the pain and distract my mind from all the madness/ discomfort inside. I needed to somehow focus the energy I wanted to create. I wanted to heal. So I painted a peaceful/ vibrant and colourful place where I knew I would one day be...'

Here is a photo of the gallery created at UCLH (University College Hospital)- (Taken September 2021)
'The pain taught me how to paint. It showed me how to let go and surrender to the flow of the brush srokes'.
